A number of people were killed and injured during celebrations following the announcement of Chadian President Mohamed Idriss Deby as the winner.

According to Chadian sources, eight people were killed and 68 injured as a result of stray gunfire by soldiers and supporters of President Mohamed Deby during the celebrations.

The capital N’Djamena and the southern city of Mundo have seen large security and military reinforcements in anticipation of possible violence after opposition Prime Minister and losing candidate Succès Masra called for protests.

At night, gunshots were heard in N’Djamena after the electoral authority declared Deby the winner of 61.3% in the May 6 vote.

“Deaths and bullet injuries have been reported, the exact number of victims is unknown, but there are about a dozen dead, including children,” said Abdullah Diarra, Amnesty International researcher.

In relative calm on Friday in N’Djamena, there were no large gatherings of supporters of the losing candidate Masra, while police and the army were heavily present with street patrols.

For its part, the Transformers party, which maintains a parallel vote count, declared Masra the winner of the election, raising doubts about the election results and posing a challenge to local authorities and the international community.

Chad’s presidential election makes it the first country to see coups in West and Central Africa to return to constitutional rule through the ballot box, although Masra and other opposition factions have reported transparency irregularities.
