The Russian Ambassador to Libya, Aidar Aganin, denied any request from any Libyan party to establish a Russian naval military base in Libya, pointing out that Western accusations of Russian military expansion in eastern Libya are aimed at justifying their own presence in some countries.
Aganin emphasized that the visits of Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov to Benghazi are within the framework of military cooperation with the Libyan National Army, and that Russia is not seeking the rich oil and gas resources that Libya possesses.
The ambassador also stressed Russia’s respect for the sovereignty of nations, affirming that the Libyan people are the ones who determine their own fate and interests.
He added that Russia’s interest in the region lies in having independent countries that set their own policies without foreign interference.
The Russian ambassador expressed regret over the difficult situation and political division in Libya, considering that elections are the only means to establish legitimate institutions that can lead Libya towards a future of development and prosperity. He called on the Libyan parties to end the division and unify the country and its institutions.
