The navy added that the migrants left the coast of Mauritania on the tenth of February.
Spanish Interior Ministry data revealed that the number of migrants sailing in rickety boats from West Africa to reach Spain’s Atlantic Canary Islands has increased sevenfold so far this year compared to the same period in 2023.
Spanish officials said Mauritania had recently become a major departure point for migrants heading to Europe.
Official data showed that the Moroccan navy rescued 16,818 people at sea in 2023, up 35% compared to the previous year.
