A Moroccan diplomatic source has rejected Algeria’s accusations that Rabat is confiscating Algerian diplomatic real estate in Morocco.
The Moroccan diplomat said in remarks published by local media that Algeria’s accusations “are baseless and fall within the Algerian escalation towards his country”.
The diplomat, who preferred not to be named, explained that since 2022, the Moroccan Foreign Ministry has asked Algeria to buy a building belonging to it adjacent to the ministry’s headquarters, as it has been vacant since the change of the Algerian embassy headquarters.
Morocco has managed the real estate issue transparently and in constant contact with the Algerian authorities, the diplomat said, stressing that the matter is not related to the headquarters of the Algerian embassy or the residence of the ambassador.
The comments come after the Algerian Foreign Ministry considered Morocco’s decision to confiscate property for the purpose of expanding foreign ministry facilities “provocations and an integrated robbery” of property belonging to its embassy in Rabat.
Relations between the two countries have witnessed a diplomatic crisis since Algeria decided to cut ties with Morocco in 2021, against the backdrop of the Western Sahara issue and Morocco’s normalization of relations with Israel.
