According to a report by the Stockholm International Institute for Research and Peace, Morocco imported 0.8% of the world’s total weapons sold between 2019 and 2023.
According to the same report, between 2014 and 2018, Morocco imported about 1.4% of the global total, thus being among the top 40 importers of weapons during the period 2019-2023, ranking twenty-ninth globally.
The report, titled “Global Trends in Arms Transfers,” states that the United States is Morocco’s largest arms supplier at 69%, followed by France at 14% and Israel at 11%.
The report spoke of a 52% decline in imports of major arms by African countries between 2014, 2018 and 2019-2023, with the decline in Algeria’s imports affecting this matter as it is the most imported.
The report revealed a change in Africa’s arms sources, with Russia taking the lead between 2019 and 2023, accounting for 24 percent of Africa’s imports of major weapons, compared to 16 percent for the United States, followed by China with 13 percent and France with 10 percent.
India, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar topped the top three in the list of the largest arms importers during the period, followed by Ukraine in fourth place.
Arms exports from the United States rose 17 percent between 2014-18 and 2019-2023, while Russia’s exports fell by more than half, while France’s exports rose 47 percent, ahead of Russia and becoming the world’s second-largest arms supplier.
