Moroccan parliamentarian Nadia Thami, from the Progress and Socialism Party (opposition), called on the government to accelerate the reconstruction process of housing damaged by the earthquake that struck the north and center of the country on September 8, 2023.
This came in a written question I addressed to the Minister of Construction and Housing, Fatima Al-Zahraa Al-Mansouri, about managing reconstruction operations in the affected areas of Al Haouz.
The earthquake, which reached a magnitude of 7.0, affected the cities of Marrakesh, Al Haouz, Chichaoua and Ouarzazate in the north, and Taroudant in the center, resulting in 2,960 deaths and 6,125 injuries, in addition to major material destruction, according to the Ministry of the Interior.
Tahami pointed to the challenges facing reconstruction operations, including the continued suffering of those affected who are living under tents after spending the cold winter in difficult conditions. She pointed to the high prices of building materials and the difficulty of reaching the affected areas due to the destruction of roads. The government is expected to respond in writing. In this context, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch recently announced the provision of financial support to more than 56,000 families to help them rebuild or restore their damaged homes, with a total budget of 1.4 billion dirhams ($140 million).
According to a previous government statement, the affected families received financial support in four stages, with each family receiving 140,000 dirhams ($14,000) for owners of homes that completely collapsed, and 80,000 dirhams ($8,000) for the rehabilitation of homes that partially collapsed. It was also decided to disburse 2,500 dirhams ($250) per month to each affected family for a year, starting in September 2023.
It is noteworthy that the number of homes affected by the earthquake reached 59,675 homes, of which 32% were completely destroyed, while the other homes were partially damaged.
