Moroccan authorities have banned the distribution of the French magazine “Marianne “in the country because of a “cartoon” deemed offensive to the Prophet Muhammad.
The Moroccan website le360 wrote that the February 29th issue of the magazine was banned from distribution because of “a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad, which includes some titles that aim to distort or even tarnish the image in order to achieve more sales.”
The website stressed that the authorities saw in the issue of the magazine a disregard towards a basic and sensitive topic for more than 1.5 billion Muslims in the world and stressed that “the timing of the publication of the caricature, on the eve of the blessed month of Ramadan, increases the seriousness of this act.”
Authorities said that article 31 of Morocco’s press and publications code allows for a ban on the distribution of foreign publications if they insult Islam.
There has been no immediate comment from the magazine on the Moroccan authorities’ decision to block the distribution of its latest issue.
