Hundreds of lawyers took part in a protest in the Moroccan capital Rabat, demanding the amendment or deletion of articles from the draft Civil Procedure Code.

The Moroccan Bar Association called for this protest, coinciding with the House of Representatives’ approval of the draft last Tuesday, which has sparked ongoing controversy and debate.

The lawyers objected to the provisions of the new law that stipulate the establishment of mediator offices before resorting to lawyers, considering this unacceptable.

They criticized Article 303, which discriminates between citizens and institutions, pointing out that it conflicts with Chapter Six of the Constitution, which stipulates the equality of all before the law.

The lawyers raised banners demanding their participation in amending the law, chanted slogans calling for the preservation of the independence of the judiciary and expressed that the new amendments conflict with the right to litigation and equality before the law.

On Tuesday, Moroccan Minister of Justice Abdellatif Wahbi confirmed that his ministry had prepared the draft in broad partnership with a group of stakeholders in the judicial sector.

Wahbi added before the House of Representatives that this project aims to regulate the relationship between citizens and justice, to achieve legal security for individuals and groups.

The law is expected to enter into force after Parliament’s approval and its publication in the Official Gazette, however, many of the provisions of this law remain controversial in Morocco.

The project aims to update the civil procedure dating back to 1913, in line with constitutional obligations and human rights principles
