English club Millwall announced on Saturday the sudden death of its goalkeeper, Montenegrin Matija Sarkic, at the age of 26.
The club mourned the player in an emotional statement on the “X” platform, expressing its deep sorrow and sympathy to his family and friends in these painful moments.
According to the British newspaper “Mirror”, Sarkic fell ill suddenly at his residence in the town of Budva, Montenegro, and died in the early hours of Saturday morning, despite friends’ quick attempts to call an ambulance.
Sarkic participated in an international match for the Montenegrin national team against Belgium a week before his death, where he attracted attention with his outstanding performance and was chosen as the best player in the match after he blocked nine shots.
Sarkic began his football career in the academy of the Belgian club Anderlecht, and then moved between several clubs, most notably Aston Villa, Birmingham City, and Stoke City in the English Premier League, before joining Millwall last August, where he played 33 matches with the team last season.
