Two Algerian experts described the report presented b Algeria-France “Memories and Truth” commission on the memory file as “not serious.”
The report, submitted to Algerian Presidents Abdelmadjid Tebboune and French President Emmanuel Macron, included 11 recommendations aimed at working on “reconciliation between the two memories,” posing a challenge to the development of relations between the two countries. The experts stated that the recommendations “fall short, only fulfilling one or two points previously raised, and they trivialize the entire issue.”
According to Algerian researcher Nabil Kahloush, as reported by the Russian agency “Sputnik,” the “compromised committee, according to current indicators, will not be able to make progress in its work without a higher political interference.”
Algerian political analyst Ahsan Khalas expressed to “Sputnik” that “the Algerian side expects the joint committee to document and assess the crimes committed by colonial France from the beginning of the occupation until the detonation of the last nuclear bomb in the Algerian desert and the impact of these crimes on Algerian social and demographic fabric.”
The Memory File represents one of the most significant issues that Algeria urges to fully address with France. During Macron’s visit to Algeria in August 2022, the two parties agreed to “establish a joint committee of French and Algerian historians responsible for working on all archives from the beginning of French colonization to independence.”
