Tribes in Mauritania have made a record number of financial donations to besieged Gazans, after a fatwa favored donation over Umrah.
Mauritanian scholar Sheikh Mohamed El Hassan Ould Dedew issued a fatwa affirming that “relief for Gaza comes first than performing Umrah in Ramadan”.
Based on this fatwa, many Mauritanians decided to transfer the amounts they had allocated to perform Umrah to the people of Gaza, amounting to about 3 million Mauritanian ouguiya (one dollar is equivalent to about 40 ounces).
The National Rally for Reform directed an estimated seven million Mauritanian ouguiya to support the Palestinian people.
At the same time, Mauritanian tribes organized fundraising initiatives to support the population in Gaza, with the Beni Hassan tribe donating 100 million Mauritanian ouguiya.
For its part, the Hassanein Villages Initiative in Support of Palestine announced the distribution of thousands of food baskets to the displaced in Gaza, in addition to providing medical aid and a shelter program to support the Palestinian people.
The Mauritanian National Ribat in Support of the Palestinian People received 300 million Mauritanian ouguiya from the Tanwajio tribe, and the Awlad Amni tribe announced the provision of 47 million Mauritanian ouguiya to support the population in Gaza.
These contributions are a continuation of the support provided by the Mauritanian people to the Palestinian people during these difficult circumstances.
