Mauritanian state television suspended a critical Ramadan series after airing episodes at the beginning of Ramadan.
The series “Her Excellency”, which was airing on the official channel “Mauritania”, was stopped after showing only four episodes.
In its episodes, the series focused on criticizing the phenomenon of large financial spending in government festivals and the corruption of some officials within ministries, in a satirical and comical way.
Producer Fouad Ould Safra announced in a post on his Facebook page that his series would be suspended, stressing that he would not allow manipulation of content and would have to show it in full on another channel or on digital platforms, calling for the protection of works of art that “purposefully criticize reality.”
On social media, the decision to suspend this Ramadan production sparked controversy and criticism of the authorities’ attempt to stifle creativity and censor the content of television productions.
It is noteworthy that the series “Her Excellency” is a series of three parts, so far, the first and second parts of which have been shown over the past two years and is widely popular on the Mauritanian street.
