A criminal court in the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott sentenced four (4) police officers convicted of torture to death charges against a human rights activist to life in prison.

The court also sentenced the police colonel who ran the police station where the murder was committed to permanent dismissal from office and deprivation of political rights.

Sufi rights activist Ould Cheine was killed last year while being arrested at a police station in Nouakchott, sparking protests and violence in Mauritania.
