On Friday, Maltese police deported a Libyan national who was convicted of hijacking an Afriqiyah Airways plane in 2016.

The Times of Malta reported that the Libyan citizen served a prison sentence in Malta for 8 years after being convicted of kidnapping and terrorism, and remained detained after the end of his sentence because he did not cooperate with the police.

The newspaper added that he will not be allowed to enter Malta or any other country in the European Union.

The events of the incident date back to December 2016, when the Afriqiyah Airways A320 plane was hijacked in Libyan airspace by two Libyans using fake weapons.

The plane was carrying 120 passengers on a domestic flight from Sebha to Tripoli, before it was diverted to Malta.

The newspaper explained that the kidnappers claimed to be from a group supporting former regime leader Muammar Gaddafi.
