The Republic of Mali announced the termination of diplomatic relations with Ukraine, against the backdrop of what it described as the latter’s involvement in supporting attacks that led to losses among the Malian army.

The decision was announced by the spokesman for the Malian government, Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga, who indicated that the government was “shocked” by the statements made by the spokesman for the Ukrainian military intelligence agency, Andriy Yusov, in which he acknowledged Ukraine’s responsibility for the attack, which Bamako described as “cowardly” and “barbaric”.

The Malian government considered the Ukrainian actions to be a violation of its sovereignty and an external interference that encourages international terrorism, announcing its intention to refer the case to the competent judicial authorities to take the necessary measures to maintain the stability of the country.

Yusov, in a statement to Ukrainian television, indicated that the whole world had witnessed the incident that allowed the rebels to carry out their operations, stressing that further details would not be disclosed.

The Ukrainian ambassador to Senegal also distributed a video supporting the attacks on the Malian forces, which also provoked a reaction from Senegal.

Several reports have spoken of Ukraine’s support for the rebels in Mali, where Ukraine provided intelligence and sometimes training support to the Tuareg rebels in northern Mali, helping them carry out successful attacks against Malian forces, supported by Wagner.

Statements by Ukrainian officials also indicated that this support included providing the rebels with vital intelligence that enabled them to achieve important battlefield victories, and photos from Ukrainian military sources showed the Tuareg rebels raising the Ukrainian flag after their victory in late July 2024.
