Mali’s Foreign Ministry announced on Friday that it had asked the Swedish ambassador to leave the country within 72 hours, in response to what it considered hostile statements made by a Swedish minister.

Swedish Minister of International Cooperation, Development and Trade, Johan Forssell, had said on Wednesday that his country’s government intends to gradually reduce aid to Mali.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry has not yet commented on this development.

Sweden recently announced its decision to stop development aid to the Republic of Mali, following the latter’s severing of diplomatic relations with Ukraine.

It is worth noting that Mali, along with Niger and Burkina Faso, has taken steps to strengthen its relations with Russia at the expense of France, its former colonial power, which has led to its distancing from Western alliances, including the United States and the European Union.
