Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Wednesday that his country will immediately prevent Israeli shipping company Zim from docking at its ports, in solidarity with the Gaza Strip.
“This ban is a response to Israel’s actions that violate basic humanitarian principles and international laws,” Ibrahim said in a statement, referring to its 75-day aggression on the Gaza Strip.
Ibrahim explained that ships bound for Israel will also be prevented from loading goods from any port in his country, especially Zim, which is the largest Israeli shipping company. He added that his country was confident that its trade would not be affected by the decision.
The Malaysian government authorized Zaim to dock its ships in Malaysian ports in 2002.
Malaysia, a Muslim-majority Southeast Asian country, has no diplomatic relations with Israel. The symbolic move largely signals frustration over the war in Gaza. Kuala Lumpur has often criticized Tel Aviv and supported the Palestinians.
