The Libyan Public Prosecutor, Al-Siddiq Al-Sur, received a decision from the head of the Libyan Intelligence Service, Hussein Al-Aib, to lift the procedural restrictions on 13 defendants in the case of the attempted assassination of Abdul Majeed Maligta, an advisor to the Prime Minister of the outgoing Libyan National Unity Government.
This decision came after a meeting between the Public Prosecutor and the head of the Intelligence Service, during which they discussed providing additional information about the functions of the members accused of planning to carry out the assassination.
Lifting the procedural restriction is an important step, as it allows the Public Prosecution to file a criminal case against the accused and refer the case file to the judiciary, which enhances justice and accountability procedures in this sensitive case.
On July 2, the Public Prosecutor’s Office announced the arrest of two members of the intelligence service accused of participating in the attempted assassination of Maligta, and it was confirmed that the rest of those involved in the operation would continue to be pursued.
The Public Prosecution had conducted extensive investigations into the detonation of a device carried on board a motor vehicle, which led to identifying the suspects and concluding their involvement in the planning and implementation of this failed attempt.
These developments come within the framework of the efforts of the Libyan authorities to enhance security and stability and combat all forms of crimes, especially those targeting prominent figures in the government.
