The spokesman for the Libyan Export Development Center, Mohamed Hamouda, said that the value of Libyan non-oil exports amounted to $3.1 billion dollars .

Libyan dates, which are grown in oasis and desert areas, ranked first in these exports, followed by olive oil grown locally in the western regions of the country, and fish that abound on the Libyan coast.

Hamouda pointed out in press statements that there are many companies that export various products, including dates, honey, pasta, couscous, fish, packaged foodstuffs, and building materials.

Hamouda added that Libyan exports are heading to countries in Africa, Europe, and Asia, especially to Sweden, Turkey, Niger, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Hamouda explained that Libya aims to enhance its non-oil exports as alternatives to the country’s main source of income, which is oil, which constitutes about 95% of national income.

Hamouda said that the Export Development Center affiliated with the Ministry of Economy and Trade of the outgoing Government of National Unity is working to achieve successes in new markets in Africa this year, by organizing bilateral “B2B” meetings between Libyan companies and companies in African countries.

Studies conducted by the Markets and Promotion Department indicated the possibility of promoting a number of local products in the markets of Senegal, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Niger, and Mauritania.

Hamouda stressed that the center seeks to enhance cooperation with several countries, including Malaysia through the Libyan-Malaysian Joint Chamber and the Malaysian Foreign Trade Development Agency.

Hamouda noted that the center is working to overcome the difficulties facing Libyan exports to enter the Turkish market, as they face large burdens related to customs duties and high taxes and are currently holding talks with the Turkish side to develop radical solutions to this issue and treat Libyan exports with the same treatment as Turkish exports in Libya.
