Libyan protesters have threatened to disrupt oil production and pumping inside the Mellita complex, which supplies gas to Italy, giving the Government of National Unity, headed by Abdelhamid Dabaiba, three days to implement their demands.
Protesters from Zawiya and the West Coast, representing the “Eradicate Corruption” movement, gathered in front of the complex on Tuesday, denouncing what they called “manipulating Libyans’ oil and gas livelihoods”.
The protesters demanded the dismissal of the head of the NOC, Farhat bin Qadara, and investigations into what they said were “excesses” by some officials, and expressed their commitment to cancel all decisions issued by him and prevent him from signing any agreements that may “harm the oil sector.”
The Libyan National Oil Corporation (NOC) declared a state of “force majeure” in the Sharara oil field last Sunday due to its closure by demonstrators, noting that the closure resulted in the suspension of crude oil supplies from the field to the Zawiya station.
