The government of Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh pressed its displeasure with the visit of the Director General of the Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund, Belqasim Haftar, to Turkey, according to statements by State Council member Mohammed Moazeb.
In his statements to Asharq Al-Awsat, Moazeb ruled out the impact of Belqasim Haftar’s visit on the Libyan political scene, stressing that the formation of a new government in Libya is linked to the consensus of the international community.
Moazeb explained that the Dbeibeh government and the political forces in western Libya are concerned about Haftar’s visit to Ankara, noting that this visit may push Turkey to play a greater role in bringing the views of the conflicting Libyan parties closer together.
Moazeb pointed out that Turkey, motivated by achieving its economic interests, has made changes to its foreign policy strategies during the past period, as it opened channels of communication with countries and entities in the region with which relations were previously tense.
Moazeb reassured that Belqasim Haftar’s visit does not mean a negative shift in Ankara’s positions towards western Libya and the Dbeibeh government, adding that the relationship between Turkey and western Libya is not in danger as some are promoting.
