Libyan Parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh stressed that any attempts to open new dialogues and agreements will return the country to square one, stressing that Libya needs to form a unified government to oversee the organization of elections.

This came during his meeting with a US delegation on Tuesday, January 23, headed by the US Special Envoy to Libya, Ambassador Richard Norland.

Saleh reiterated during the meeting that “the parliament has achieved what is required of it in terms of constitutional rule, the issuance of electoral laws and the mechanism for electing a unified government that organizes elections.”

It is noteworthy that the Libyan parliament adheres to the need to form a new government and adopt the electoral laws that it approved after being approved by the 6+6 Joint Committee, despite the refusal of the head of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, to hand over power and leave his chair before holding elections.

This intransigence and divergence in positions among Libyan leaders shows the difficulty of reaching consensus and understandings on the future of the political process in the country in the coming days and weeks, and the many obstacles that stand in the way of resolving the crisis.

Since the collapse of the electoral process that was scheduled for December 2021, the political solution in Libya has been stalled due to disputes between the ruling parties over electoral laws and a struggle for power, despite UN and international efforts to bring them to the same negotiating table in order to resolve differences and agree on a roadmap that leads the country to holding elections and ending the transitional phases.
