The Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government mandated by the Libyan House of Representatives, Abdulhadi al-Hawij, said that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi’s candidacy for the upcoming presidential elections is a positive point.

In a statement to the French website “Monde Afrique” during his visit to Paris, al-Hawij said that Gaddafi’s candidacy proves that Libyan society is reconciled even with the former regime. The Libyan official said that the situation in Libya is complex, expressing hope that elections will be the solution, but pointed out that “elections are not a magic wand, but an important tool to express the will of the Libyan people after the dark decade in which our people suffered greatly.”

Al-Huwaij spoke about the failure of previous international attempts and conferences to resolve the Libyan crisis due to the regional and international interests of the various powers that do not agree with each other, expressing regret for “the usurpation of the Libyan decision, and the receipt of the Libyan file by some regional and international powers that dominated the Libyan political scene,” as he put it, and commented: “But today we believe that there is a new will and vision to resolve the crisis.”

The Libyan diplomat continued: “There is no winner or loser. Everyone is a loser in a country that is suffering from harm, sadness and pain, and we all benefit from a country where everyone can contribute to institutions, enjoy rights and citizenship, as our compass, direction and goal are the same, called Libya.”

Al-Hawij called for “establishing a law that unites all Libyans and does not differentiate between tribes or between this region or that,” stressing that “Libyans are one family, and we must strengthen law, citizenship, freedoms, development, education, and the fight against corruption, ignorance and poverty.”

Regarding his candidacy for the presidency and the initiatives he will put forward if he wins the elections, he revealed that he promised to “rebuild institutions, restore trust among Libyans, establish the rule of law, institutions and citizenship, in addition to transforming the Libyan economic model to move from a rentier economy to diversifying sources of income in Libya.”
