The official spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior in the Interim Government of National Unity, Abdel Moneim Al-Arabi, announced that the Ras Jadir border crossing between Libya and Tunisia will be reopened tomorrow, Monday.
The statement published by the “Bawabat Al-Wasat” website comes after several previous attempts to reopen the crossing failed, despite the signing of a security agreement between the Libyan and Tunisian authorities.
On June 12, the outgoing Libyan National Unity Government and the Tunisian government signed a security agreement to reopen the Ras Jadir crossing. The agreement aims to reopen it after it was closed for three months, which greatly affected the movement of people and vehicles between the two countries.
It is noteworthy that the crossing witnessed armed clashes on March 19, between Libyan Interior Ministry forces and gunmen from the border region, which led to its closure by the Libyan and Tunisian authorities.
Since the closure of the Ras Jadir crossing last March, the movement of passengers and commercial trucks has been diverted to the Dhiba Wazen crossing, which caused great pressure and increased the waiting period, which sometimes exceeded 20 hours, according to Wazen land crossing control data.
It is expected that the reopening of the Ras Jadir crossing will contribute to relieving pressure on the Dhiba Wazen crossing, improve traffic between the two countries, and restore hope to the local residents and merchants who were greatly affected by the long closure of the crossing.
It is noteworthy that the Dhiba Wazen crossing, which is currently used, includes modern inspection and customs facilities, and its movement has declined in recent years, and in 2023 it was partially reopened.
