Today, Sunday, the head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Menfi, held a meeting with Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, where developments in the national reconciliation file in Libya were discussed.

The meeting came on the sidelines of his participation in the sixth semi-annual meeting between the African Union, the regional economic communities and the African regional mechanisms.

During the meeting, Menfi and Nguesso discussed ways to activate the role of the African Union in the Libyan national reconciliation process, and the discussion focused on strengthening the role of the African Union in supervising this process to ensure the achievement of comprehensive reconciliation and in cooperation with the Presidential Council.

This meeting comes at a time when the comprehensive national reconciliation conference, which was scheduled to be held in the city of Sirte on April 28, 2024, was postponed.

The meeting was postponed after representatives of the General Command of the Libyan Arab Armed Forces and some supporters of the former regime withdrew from the preparatory committee for the conference, which was supervised by the Presidential Council with the support of the High-Level African Committee on Libya and the African Union Commission.

In a related context, Congo expressed its aspiration for holding a national reconciliation conference, as its President Denis Sassou Nguesso continues to send his envoys to the Libyan parties to support the political process sponsored by the United Nations and to strengthen national reconciliation efforts.
