A video has gone viral showing popular singer Fatima Trabelsia, known as “al-Humsa”, performing a song whose lyrics were seen by many as encouraging dissolution.

Libyan security authorities arrested the artist after a video of her performing a song that sparked controversy on the Libyan street, describing it as “immoral and encouraging decay”.

The Stabilization Support Agency of the Ministry of Interior said that the so-called “Humsa” was arrested for committing the crime of indecency, “in order to preserve the good morals that characterize Libyan society,” stressing that “he will stand an impregnable barrier and strike with an iron hand against anyone who tries to violate morals and values.”

The agency added that it will take the necessary legal measures against this artist, considering the act committed as criminal law.

In recent hours, a wave of anger erupted on social media in Libya, after a video clip of Fatima Trabelsia singing at a wedding and dancing to a song that Libyans considered to encourage moral decay, infidelity and illicit relationships and call for family disintegration. Fatima Trabelsia, known for singing at weddings, was arrested in 2017 by the Deterrence Service while driving her car on Shatt Road in the capital Tripoli on charges of possessing prohibited materials.
