Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, head of the outgoing National Unity Government, launched a sharp attack on the House of Representatives and the State House, accusing them of obstructing the electoral process in Libya.

Dbeibeh stated during his speech at the government meeting held in Tripoli, that the legislative bodies colluded to postpone the elections and extend their terms of office by submitting proposals for additional transitional stages, with the aim of preserving their own interests and strengthening their control over power.

Dbeibeh drew attention to a recent meeting held in Misrata that included members of both councils, which, according to him, aimed to redistribute positions in a way that only serves the interests of the participants, adding that a small elite monopolizes wealth and weapons, and is trying to block the right of the Libyan people to determine their political destiny.

Dbeibeh stated that despite the challenges, the government is continuing its efforts to organize fair and transparent elections, stressing the need to free Libyans from meetings that serve only narrow goals.

Dbeibeh stressed the importance of expanding the circle of consultations throughout Libya to strengthen the political process and prepare for the unification of executive authorities under the supervision of the UN mission, with the aim of ending the current political crisis and ensuring that elections are held in an atmosphere of freedom and fairness.

A number of members of the Libyan House of Representatives and the State met last Thursday with the coordination of parties and national movements in the city of Misrata, and agreed after their consultations that the election laws agreed upon between the House of Representatives and the State are implementable and elections can be held on their basis.

In the statement, they stressed the need to support efforts to prepare for the second expanded forum of the Houses of Representatives and the State for the coming period to accelerate the launch and implementation of an agreed-upon road map. They also stressed the need to expand consultations across Libya and urge the two chambers to launch a political process facilitated by the UN mission to begin unifying executive authority to create appropriate conditions.
