The Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, Al-Siddiq Al-Kabir, and his deputy, Marei Al-Barassi, announced the withdrawal of fifty-dinar banknotes, for the first and second issues, from circulation as of next Sunday.

The central bank directed commercial banks to accept these expired notes from customers and add them to their current accounts, setting the last day for receiving them on August 29th.

Counterfeiters took advantage of the security and economic turmoil to promote counterfeit currency, with the central bank indicating that investigations are underway to identify the sources of counterfeit currency, in cooperation with the Public Prosecution.

The decision came after the central bank revealed last February that counterfeit banknotes were circulating in the markets, where three issues of the currency were detected, issued by the Central Bank in Tripoli, another from Benghazi, and a third of unknown origin.
