Member of the Libyan State Council, Amina Al-Mahjoub, expressed the council’s rejection of the recent steps taken by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, regarding opening the door for nominations for the presidency of the government until August 11.
Al-Mahjoub explained in press comments that the decision of the House of Representatives did not take into account the procedures agreed upon within the State Council, noting that the members who attended the Cairo meeting do not necessarily represent the position of the council in its entirety.
She explained that the meeting and its outcomes “do not represent the State Council,” which reflects the existence of internal differences on how to deal with the formation of the new government.
The tripartite meeting held in Cairo, which included the heads of the Presidential Council, Muhammad Al-Menfi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, and the President of the Supreme Council of State, Muhammad Takala, reached an agreement to form a unified government leading to the holding of Libyan elections.
The attendees agreed to unify sovereign positions in a way that ensures the activation of their role at the level of the Libyan state, and a technical committee was formed to consider appropriate amendments to expand the consensus base. The attendees also agreed to hold a second round urgently to complete this agreement and bring it into effect.
