The US Special Envoy for Libya, Richard Norland, and the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy, Per Nadt, discussed with Khalifa Haftar in Benghazi the strengthening of the work of the UN envoy to Libya, Abdullah Batelli.
They stressed the importance of unifying the military institution and ensuring that funds are disbursed for the reconstruction of Derna and other flood-affected areas in a transparent manner, led by experts and with technical support from international institutions, according to the US embassy.
This meeting is the first of its kind after a dispute between the envoy and Haftar, which was punctuated by verbal exchanges and accusations, as the envoy described Haftar as the reason for the introduction of foreign forces into Libya.
Norland added in his remarks that Haftar’s military actions “obstructed any attempt to produce a political settlement.”
For his part, Haftar said that there is a prolongation from some foreign countries in the Libyan issue through their ambassadors, who come,” called Norland in the lead.
Haftar accused Nornlad of “failing miserably to achieve any results that contribute to resolving the crisis as much as they contributed to deepening differences among the Libyan people.”
