Tripoli International Stadium reopened in March in the presence of a large crowd of fans and Libyan officials, after two years of maintenance and renovation operations that cost 100 million dinars.
The stadium was equipped with an artificial and natural pitch that met international standards, similar to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Spain. Only three months had passed since its opening until criticism began to come in due to the state of corruption that began to appear on the field.
Bloggers posted pictures on social media showing large gaps in the grass, and a clear deterioration in its condition, despite the huge amounts of money spent on its maintenance.
The disastrous condition of the stadium sparked widespread anger among Libyans, who began demanding the opening of an investigation to find out the reasons for the rapid deterioration after the new repairs that the stadium underwent. Bloggers and citizens called for those responsible for managing these operations and exploiting public money to be held accountable.
In response to the criticism, the Director of the Administrative Centers Development Authority confirmed that the deterioration is due to the process of drying and renewing the sports turf, stressing that these processes are common in all sports facilities around the world and are subject to careful control and supervision by specialized companies.
Demands escalated for the immediate restoration of maintenance at Tripoli International Stadium, especially after pictures showed the severe deterioration of the ground shortly after its opening.
Critics point out that this deterioration reflects mismanagement and a waste of public money, demanding an immediate investigation to hold those responsible for this failure in maintenance accountable.
