Libya ranked twentieth globally in the list of the most polluting countries for atmospheric air, according to the global platform “AirVisual Platform” specialized in air quality.
Fares Fathi, a professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Benghazi, stressed that this classification is a serious indicator that should be paid attention to, given the lack of sufficient attention to vegetation cover, which plays an important role in purifying the air from pollutants and harmful gases.
Fathi explained to the Libyan newspaper Al-Anba that air pollution in Libya is a scourge due to the lack of attention to sustainable development, noting that this pollution can negatively affect the public health of the population.
Using dedicated air quality monitoring stations, air quality was monitored over the past year in Benghazi and the oases, where the average concentration of pollutants was 34.3 mg/m3, which is considered unhealthy.
It is worth noting that five outdoor air quality monitoring stations were installed in February 2023, by a major Swiss company in this field, and were distributed in different areas in line with population density and human activities.
