Libya has advanced significantly in the technological field to rank first continentally in the ICT Development Index for 2024.
Libya jumped from fifth place last year to the top spot this year with a total score of 88.1, surpassing Morocco, which scored 86.8 points, according to what the International Telecommunication Union announced in its latest report.
Morocco was followed in the ranking by Seychelles and Mauritius with points of 84.7 and 84.2, respectively, while South Africa came in fifth with a score of 83.6 points. These results come as confirmation of the technological boom achieved by Libya, which witnessed an improvement of 11% compared to last year.
The report addressed the significant improvements in Libya’s technological infrastructure, which have led to enhanced network coverage and defrayed costs related to mobile data.
Libya scored 88.2 points in the Comprehensive Communication Index and 87.9 in the Tangible Communication Index, which reflects the significant progress in the widespread use and distribution of digital technologies.
In a related context, the Government of Libya is holding talks with the United States to explore future cooperation opportunities in the field of information and communications technology, as part of its endeavor to enhance its technological capabilities and achieve optimal digital integration.
It is noteworthy that the Libyan Telecommunications and Informatics Authority participated in the work of the 80th Internet Policy Meeting of the Organization (ICANN) in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, in the period from 9 to 13 last June, in which developments in the governance of the paths transporting data over the Internet were discussed, with the aim of strengthening the state’s digital sovereignty Libyan and localization of data movement.
