Libya’s Joint Security Room has taken over the tasks of securing the Ras Ajdir border crossing with Tunisia from the General Staff of the Government of National Unity amid efforts to reopen the crossing.
Maj. Gen. Abdul Hakim al-Khaitouni, head of the security chamber, announced that the interior minister of the Government of National Unity, Imad Trabelsi, directed to keep the administration at the port until it is handed over to the responsible authorities after its maintenance, restructuring and operation.
The Ras Ajdir border crossing witnessed security tension that caused its closure at the end of last month, prompting the interior minister-designate to withdraw members working in the directorate, police stations and the Passports and Nationality Authority from the crossing, in order to preserve lives and property.
The crisis almost led to armed confrontations between the forces of the government of Abdelhamid Dabaiba and Amazigh militias, but an agreement was reached to calm tensions thanks to the efforts of political and tribal forces.
Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army Salah al-Din al-Namroush said that the goal of forming the joint military force is to secure the crossing and restore stability in it, stressing that the force operates without political or tribal tensions.
The interior minister stressed the readiness of the Libyan army to confront any attack on workers at the crossing from the Libyan side and accused smugglers of being behind the security tension at the border crossing.
