The Libyan Presidential Council announced Libya’s joining of South Africa in a legal case against Israel before the International Court of Justice, due to its ongoing war on the Gaza Strip.

The spokeswoman for the Libyan Presidential Council, Najwa Wahiba, stated on her “X” platform account: “Libya submits an intervention declaration under Article 63 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice in the case brought by South Africa regarding the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip against the Israeli occupation state.”

A statement issued by the International Court of Justice clarified that Libya’s request is based on Article 63 of the Court’s Statute, which “grants third-party states the right to intervene for the purpose of submitting a statement regarding the interpretation of the Convention.”

The statement mentioned that Libya “believes that Israel has violated its obligations under the Genocide Convention, through its governmental agencies, representatives, and other individuals and organizations operating under its control or influence.”

On its part, South Africa has submitted a new urgent request to the International Court of Justice, demanding additional emergency measures against Israel in the genocide case due to its escalation targeting Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

The court stated that South Africa considers recent developments to be a continuous violation of the rights of Palestinians that cannot be rectified.

It is worth mentioning that South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel before the International Court of Justice at the end of December 2023, based on allegations that Israel violated the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948.

A large majority of the members of the court’s panel, consisting of 17 judges, voted in favor of taking urgent measures to meet most of South Africa’s demands, except for issuing an order to stop the war on Gaza.
