Osama Hamad, head of the government in charge of the Libyan House of Representatives, opened the Africa-Europe conference on migration on Saturday in Benghazi.

Held under the theme “Sustainable Solutions to Migration”, the conference witnessed a wide participation of representatives of African and European parliaments and governments and aims to deepen dialogue and exchange experiences between the two continents in the field of regulating and managing migration flows.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Second Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Misbah Ouahida, and the President of the Pan-African Parliament, Fortune Sharumbera, who participated in discussions aimed at developing effective strategies to address migration-related challenges.

The two-day conference will discuss ways to enhance international and regional cooperation to combat human smuggling networks, protect migrants’ rights, and improve refugee conditions.

It also focuses on studying the economic, social and political roots of the phenomenon of irregular migration and exchanging experiences and best practices in dealing with its security, health and environmental repercussions.

The meeting will discuss mechanisms to enhance safe and regular migration opportunities and link them to the needs of the labor market in receiving countries, in an effort to reduce risks to migrants and facilitate their involvement in legal migration pathways.

The event followed a series of meetings and conferences organized by the government mandated by the House of Representatives, which focused on analyzing migration phenomena and searching for practical solutions.
