Libya’s interim government, headed by Osama Hammad, has announced a plan to revive Sirte’s economy through the establishment of a free trade zone and development projects.
During a meeting attended by a number of government and local officials, Hammad highlighted the government’s interest in Sirte and its commitment to implementing projects that benefit all parts of the country.
During the meeting, Hammad discussed the obstacles facing the implementation of projects in the city and followed up on progress in the service and security sectors and said that “the government responds to demands to improve medical services, especially for oncology patients.”
Belkacem Haftar, director general of the Development and Reconstruction Fund, revealed plans to start projects that include modernizing the airport and port, as well as renovating government headquarters, hospitals, and schools.
Haftar noted that the government is also working to improve basic infrastructure including lighting, roads, and water and sewage networks.
Sirte is the birthplace of former Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi, and witnessed fierce battles during the Libyan war, and the city suffered massive destruction that led to the destruction of many buildings and infrastructure.
