The Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, Al-Siddiq Omar Al-Kabir, discussed with the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephanie Khoury, the increasing threats facing the security of the bank and its employees.
The two parties stressed during a phone call the need to stabilize the bank and maintain its vital role in preserving Libya’s financial sustainability.
Khoury expressed the United Nations’ support for the Central Bank of Libya and its role in maintaining financial and economic stability and preserving the country’s capabilities.
In a related context, Al-Kabir held a meeting with the US Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, in the Tunisian capital, and they discussed the security situation surrounding the bank.
A statement issued by the Central Bank conveyed the United States’ full support for the bank in facing these challenges, stressing the importance of protecting the integrity of Libya’s sovereign institutions.
Norland warned against attempts to forcefully replace the bank’s leadership, noting that such actions could lead to Libya’s isolation from international financial markets.
These concerns come amid reports of armed movements near the bank’s headquarters in Tripoli, coinciding with battles between armed brigades that led to the killing of 9 people recently.
Relations between Al-Kabir and the head of the Government of National Unity, Abdel Hamid Dbeibeh, have deteriorated amid rumors of efforts to dismiss Al-Kabir with the support of military forces in the west of the country.
