Libyan security authorities have discovered a mass grave containing 65 bodies of illegal migrants buried in a valley in the western Libyan region of Shwerif.

The security authorities announced the opening of a wide investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident, and to identify the identities of the owners of the bodies, the cause of their death and the party responsible for burying them in this place.

Libya’s Criminal Security Service is investigating whether the victims were liquidated by human smuggling gangs and buried under the sand or died of thirst after getting lost in the vast desert.

Specialists in the agency collected DNA samples for each body, and after completing all legal procedures, and by order of the prosecutor, the bodies were reburied.

The Libyan Qurayyat police reported that the bodies belonged to expatriate workers migrating illegally, and this was verified by their clothes.
