The Libyan authorities arrested 60 Egyptians who illegally crossed its borders, according to what official sources in Tripoli announced.
The migrants were arrested while they were preparing for a trip across the sea from the coastal city of Zuwara, where the authorities stated that the detainees were transferred to a center of the Directorate Support Force to complete the necessary legal and humanitarian procedures before their deportation.
Investigations indicate that most of the detainees are from the city of Sahel Selim in Assiut Governorate, southern Egypt, where they left for Libya last January for the purpose of work, before they found themselves victims of illegal immigration networks.
These events come in light of escalating anxiety among the families of the detainees, as relatives of some of them provided painful testimonies about losing contact with their loved ones or discovering photos of their relatives among the detainees on the social media platforms of the Libyan police.
The families confirmed that many of the young men traveled legally and that they were not planning to immigrate to Europe.
It is noteworthy that the Libyan authorities returned 350 Egyptian immigrants in January 2024 who were in the country illegally, and according to the Italian Ministry of the Interior, the number of immigrants arriving in Italy from Libya decreased by 67.1% in the first quarter of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023.
