Benghazi Security Directorate arrested a group of illegal immigrants in Sidi Khalifa area today, Saturday, after a campaign launched by the directorate to control the public street and enforce the law in various areas of the city.

The statement of the directorate did not specify the number of immigrants who were arrested, as they were handed over to the competent authorities to follow up on the necessary legal procedures.

In another context, the Minister of Interior in the outgoing Government of National Unity, Imad Trabelsi, confirmed that there are between two and 2.5 million foreigners in Libya, where 70-80% of them entered without visas, as a result of the wars and unrest that led to the collapse of the security services in the country.

Trabelsi indicated that these issues constitute a major security challenge that requires radical solutions, noting that some organizations seek to settle immigrants in Libya. He also explained that the majority of those involved in national ID forgery operations belong to African and East Asian nationalities.

It is noteworthy that the most important campaigns to arrest illegal immigrants took place in February 2024, where multiple security campaigns were carried out in the city of Benghazi and its suburbs, and one of the operations resulted in the arrest of about 2,102 immigrants of Sudanese and Chadian nationalities in the Kufra region and their deportation to their countries.
