The third company of the Law Enforcement Department of the General Administration of Security Operations in Libya announced on Monday that it had assumed the duties of securing the Ras Jadir border crossing with Tunisia.
The administration, headed by the Minister of Interior in the outgoing National Unity Government, Imad Trabelsi, stated that it had begun its security work inside the crossing, which had remained closed since last March 19 following violent clashes between Interior Ministry forces and an armed group that controlled it.
The administration stated that “intensive maintenance work is currently underway on the crossing’s corridors, in preparation for its expected reopening during Eid al-Adha, which will enhance commercial activity and restore life to the border movement between Libya and Tunisia.”
The administration added, “The reopening of the crossing will contribute to improving the economic situation in the region and relieving pressure on other crossings, which will help stabilize the security and economic conditions in the border region.”
The Ras Jadir crossing is one of the most important border crossings between Libya and Tunisia, as it constitutes a vital artery for the movement of trade, goods and travelers between the two countries. It plays a major role in the Libyan economy through the transport of basic goods, fuel and foodstuffs. It also contributes to strengthening social and family ties between residents of the border areas.
