The Minister of Economy and Trade in the outgoing Libyan National Unity Government, Muhammad Al-Hawaij, announced his country’s readiness to join any international economic organization that benefits it, including the “BRICS” group.
Al-Hawaij said: “BRICS is a global economic organization that aims to exchange benefits between member states, and Libya welcomes any action that leads to global economic stability and improving the standard of people. We are ready to participate in any economic system that we see as beneficial to us, and we choose the appropriate time for that.”
The “BRICS: group includes Russia, Brazil, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, and now represents 45% of the world’s population.
Russia has chaired the group since January 1, 2024, and the Russian city of Kazan is scheduled to host the BRICS summit from October 22 to 24.
Regarding the continuation of economic cooperation with Russia in light of the recent US sanctions on Moscow, Al-Hawaij stressed that “Libya cooperates with all countries according to its interests and in a way that achieves participation in its stability and the development of its economic resources. We dealt with Russia previously and we will continue to deal with it if that is in our interest, such as completing Railways, oil and gas exploration.”
He added: “We cooperate with Russia in accordance with our economic and commercial interests and in a way that contributes to Libya’s political, economic and security stability. We are committed to implementing the contracts signed with it and activating the agreements between Libya and Russia, including the import of grains such as wheat and other aspects of economic cooperation.”
