Transparency International’s 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) revealed that endemic corruption in Arab countries is significantly undermining progress in the region.

Despite countries’ commitments to fight corruption, governments often abandon commitments, ultimately putting fundamental rights such as health and education at risk.

Libya ranked 15th in the Arab world with 18 points on the Corruption Perceptions Index.

The index ranks 180 countries and territories by their levels of public sector corruption on a scale from zero (highly corrupt) to 100 (very honest).

In the Arab world, the United Arab Emirates scored 68 degrees, Qatar 58 and Saudi Arabia 52, the highest scores compared to the rest of the Arab countries.

Yemen received a score of 16, Syria a score of 13 and Somalia a score of 11, the lowest score on the index.

Globally, Denmark received the highest score of 90, followed by Finland (87), New Zealand (85), and Sweden (82).

The United States is reported to be providing support of $4.5 million to the Libyan Sabha Airport
