The “Nigerian Tribune” newspaper revealed in a recent report that Libya topped the list of the most corrupt African countries for the year 2024, according to the Corruption Perceptions Index issued by Transparency International.
The report indicated that Libya ranked 170th globally out of 180 countries included in the evaluation, indicating the widespread corruption in the country.
The report stated that the weakness of institutions and political instability, which worsened after the overthrow of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, contributed significantly to the exacerbation of corruption in Libya.
The report revealed that the ongoing struggle to control the country’s oil wealth increased the challenges of exploitation and hindered economic development efforts.
Libya was not the only one in this negative classification, as the list also included Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Equatorial Guinea, Comoros, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Eritrea, reflecting the widespread corruption in the African continent.
