Libya’s Ministry of Health has announced that it will allow local private pharmaceutical companies to import cancer drugs through public tenders.

The ministry indicated in a statement that tenders related to the import of cancer drugs will begin in June 2024.

Earlier, Abdul Hamid Hamida, a doctor in the oncology department at the university hospital, confirmed that breast cancer is alarmingly prevalent in Libya, noting that the hospital receives an average of six to seven cases per day.

He pointed out that the oncology department suffers from a lack of chemotherapy, as some drugs are sometimes available and some are lacking at other times, including chemotherapy for breast cancer “Harsabtin”, which is consumed in abundance due to the large number of injuries.
