The volunteer organization “Alarm Phone” on Tuesday launched a distress call in the central Mediterranean for a small boat carrying 40 migrants who set off from the coast of Libya.

The NGO said the migrants on the boat were in danger due to bad weather and engine failure.

“They need immediate help,” the organization said, stressing that “authorities have been alerted.”

Alarm Phone was founded in October 2014 with the aim of monitoring the Mediterranean through networks of civil society activists in Europe and North Africa to provide assistance to those in distress in the Mediterranean waters.

It is noteworthy that the problem of illegal immigration in Libya worsened after the events of February 2011, due to the state of lawlessness suffered by the country, which is a major transit station for illegal migrants from Africa to Europe.

Libya is an ideal destination for smugglers and migrants, as its sea and land borders extend over a wide area and are close to European shores, and the cost of the journey from Libya to Europe is about 2,500 US dollars.
