At least 9 people were killed, and 16 others were injured on Friday in clashes between two brigades in the Tajoura area east of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, according to official figures.
The Tripoli Ambulance and Emergency Service said on its official Facebook page that the death toll from the clashes, which the service dealt with, reached 9 dead and 16 injured, without clarifying whether these victims were civilians or militants.
Anadolu Agency quoted a security source as saying that the clashes are taking place between the “Rahbat Al-Duru” and “Al-Shaheeda Sabria” brigades, against the backdrop of an assassination attempt on the commander of the Rahbat Al-Duru battalion, Bashir Khalaf Allah, without clarifying his fate.
The source did not confirm who was behind the assassination attempt but explained that “the militants of the Rahbat Al-Duru battalion accused the Al-Shaheeda Sabria battalion of the assassination attempt,” while the latter did not respond to this accusation.
He continued: “Immediately, the gunmen of the Rahba Shields Battalion attacked the camp of the Martyr Sabria Battalion, located in the Al-Hamidiya area of Tajoura, and seized it.”
Western Libya has been suffering from security problems from time to time amid an ongoing political division since 2022, as UN-sponsored efforts to hold parliamentary and presidential elections have faltered, which Libyans hope will lead to the transfer of power to a single government and end an armed conflict that has plagued it for years.
