Libyan security forces launched a raid on a farm used as a shelter for illegal immigrants in the Al-Khuwair area, south of Tobruk, and succeeded in freeing more than 100 immigrants from the clutches of smuggling networks.

This operation came in response to accurate information received by the security authorities and was carried out in coordination between the Investigation and Arrest Office of the Criminal Investigation Department and the Criminal Investigation Department of the Tobruk Security Directorate, under the permission of the Public Prosecution.

Tensions escalated during the operation when the smugglers opened fire on the security forces, forcing the latter to respond in kind, and an exchange of fire broke out that lasted for several hours before the forces were able to storm the farm and free the detainees, while some of the smugglers and immigrants managed to escape. The authorities continue their efforts to pursue the fugitives and secure the area.

The Libyan city of Tobruk is an important transit point for illegal migrants seeking to reach Europe, and in 2023, authorities in Tobruk deported more than 1,000 migrants, mostly from Sudan and Egypt, including migrants with diseases such as hepatitis and AIDS.
