Algeria unexpectedly postponed the reception of Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albarez, just 12 hours before the scheduled visit scheduled for Monday (February 12th), which was expected to mark the beginning of political normalization in relations between the two countries.
The Spanish side explained that Algeria had postponed the meeting due to “scheduling problems” in the host country.
Relations between Algeria and Spain have deteriorated sharply for more than two years, but about 3 months ago, relations began to improve, with ambassadors appointed for both countries.
Madrid had expected the foreign ministers’ meeting to be a diplomatic success, not a failure, a sign of recent positive progress in relations.
Several factors contributed to this improvement, including Algeria’s recognition of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s position in support of the establishment of a Palestinian state, and renewed talk of supporting a political process to resolve the conflict in Western Sahara in accordance with UN resolutions.
